ews
from Egypt". Are not the two
terms inconsistent The
Jews are they not according to
tradition "Those who CAME OUT
from the land of Egypt".
This Jewish community has known
several times, over a historical
period of 32 centuries, moments
of glory, liberty and cultural
radiance. Today, history has
separated for the first time
Egypt from its Jews. The
ordinary traveler does not know
that he could still discover
present remnants of a very
ancient Jewish Culture.
Thus many of us who were
attached to the Nile Valley
wanted to keep alive the
memories of this vanished
community and transmit by
photographs (400 pictures) and
texts the legacy of those Jews
from Egypt. They included
distinguished rabbis and
intellectuals , such as Philo of
Alexandria, R. Saadia Gaon, R.
Moshe Ben Maimon better known as
Maimonides, the Radbaz, Yaacob
Sanua, the Great rabbis Haim
Nahoum, Moshe Ventura, also
Carlos Suares, Elian Finbert,
George Cattaoui, Edmond Jabes...and
many others
In putting together the
fragments of a puzzle,
photographs were assembled to
create a world that has
vanished. The authors of the
book have expressed their desire
to reawaken, this world with its
contradictions raising questions
about the role of this minority
in a region which for a number
of millennia, has seen the
building and destruction of
nations.
