RESPONSE TO THE " COUNCIL " PROPOSITION

A Rabbinical Approach

A Stimulating proposition has been made by a member of our community at large which deserves our attention and analysis.

Our community has been increasing and developing into strong and influential multiple autonomic congregations that are leaving their marks on American Jewry.

Indeed, time has come to unite " all our resources under one single organization to draw plans and blue prints to better serve our community. Our needs are considerably greater, and enormously more sensitive." We have the obligation and responsibility to guarantee our future generations an adequate Jewish life according to our own Heritage and Traditions.

The following issues have been discussed:

A. We cannot ignore the many families that send their children to public schools because they cannot meet the required Yeshiba tuition. We as Rabbis must insist and ensure that all the children of our respective communities attend Jewish schools/Yeshivot.

B. We have to have the provisions in place for orphaned children to insure their Jewish education and SEPHARDIC upbringing. This can be done either through a next of kin program or via community sponsored foster care.

C. A program should be instituted to provide our elderly, the crown of our community, emotional, social, religious cultural, and financial support if necessary.

D. The single mothers in our community by widowhood or by divorce should be provided with the necessary community support until she is able to provide for her family.

Therefore, the proposal for a " COUNCIL " made up of all our synagogues and congregations to serve our community by developing an infrastructure that will provide the community a continuous guidance in religious, social, and humanitarian services is a keen proposal that should be supported by the Rabbinate of our community and the community at large.

RESPONSE TO THE " COUNCIL " PROPOSITION

A Rabbinical Approach

The Council will be comprised by different committees that will oversee their respective areas.

1.- The Rabbinical Council

Will oversee all religious and Kashrut matters. Marriages files - Ketubot and divorce files -Gittin, including the civil status of community members.

2.- The Education Committee

Will oversee the general management of schools including the general studies curricula, the Jewish studies curriculum will be overseen in combination with the Rabbinical Council.

3.- The Cultural Committee

Will organize and coordinate lectures, conferences of general and Jewish interest as well as Pizmonim concerts, etc. This committee can combine its activities with the SEPHARDIC Community Center.

4.- The Hesed Committee

Will provide emotional financial and medical help to anyone in need. This can be done through the assistance of Bikur Holim.

5.-The Matrimonial Committee

Will provide assistance in finding spouses through confidential lists that are assembled by the committee, or by individuals who wish to provide their own names.

6.-The Political Action Committee

Will create a political lobby to represent our community. This is becoming a necessity. Our political agenda have been ignored for a long time by the established lobbyist. We may differ with the general Jewish agenda or we may have different needs that this committee can help emphasize in the political arena through our representatives and political leaders. It is about time that our community's voice be sounded so that it could be heard.

7.- The financial committee

Will conduct fundraisers, establish dues and collect them, and provide the necessary funds to run the council and support its activities.

RESPONSE TO THE " COUNCIL " PROPOSITION

A Rabbinical Approach

The composition of the council will include the Rabbi, President and the Treasurer of each Synagogue, Congregation and School. They being the leaders of their respective organization can command the most respect and admiration. The composition of each committee can include, at the invitation of the above mentioned persons, or by any one volunteering.

It is imperative to state that this " Council " will provide ample autonomy to individual synagogues, congregations and schools as well as to individual Rabbis to conduct their own affairs as they see fit. this " Council " cannot and should not impose its will against the will of member organizations. A dictatorial rule will be counterproductive and will bring divisiveness rather than harmony. Mutual respect will be the foundation of the " Council " on which it can be built and perpetuated.

In this way we can "have the foresight to lay the foundation build and create new projects necessary for the community's future."
