Sorry, I made a mistake in my last message: my family ( KATZ / CATZ / BARCILON ) was not living in Heliopolis but in ZAMALEK near Cairo (and also in Alexandria). Autant pour moi ! ...

I was born in 1940 in Cairo. Attended the Lycee Francais du Caire. Left Egypt in 1957 with my family, lived in Paris for 2 years and immigrated to the US in 1959. I would love to hear from old friends I have not heard from since leaving Cairo. Just loved your website. My son who is doing our family tree has gathered all kinds of information on the Jewish community of Egypt, and our family. Many thanks for a great source of information.

I have enjoyed reading the many different sections of your website. I have friends who left Egypt in the early 60's, and I wanted to acquire a better historical knowlege and perspective on what life was like for them in their homeland at that time. I hope and pray everyday that we will be able to live in a world where all of us are judged on our character rather than our race, gender or religion. At best, I hope that we can come to understand and respect our uniqueness as well as our commonalities.

My name is Mark Kagan. In the fall of 1976, I was a member of a group of 10 students from the State University of New York who studied at Alexandria University. I lived in an apartment at Mustapha Pasha on Hurreya St. during September to December. I was the only Jew in the group and I came to know the Jewish community in Alexandria, including Clement Setton, when I attended High Holy Day services at Nebi Daniel synagogue. After that semester, I went to study in Israel. I returned for a visit a year and a half later and stayed at the Jewish Retirement Home during Pesach. Mr. Messeca accompanied me to the police station. If anyone reads this and remembers me or hearing about me, please respond. I would like to know what happened to you.

I was amazed to find this site, which I stumbled upon when I entered my family name 'Savdie' in a yahoo search. I was confronted by the image of a man- perhaps a relative- Rabbi Salomon Savdie, whom I know nothing of but would be very interested to hear of. Please write to me if you have any information. Thank You.

Hello, My father was born John Chalom in Cairo (or Heliopolis) in 1937 (he moved to Sydney, Australia and changed his name at age 10). His father was Willy Chalom, also of Cairo. Willy Chalom wrote a book called "Nous Venons de Palestine" (a sort of Zionist travelogue) in 1938, co-authored with Jules Levy, his brother-in-law and my great-uncle. Other than that I have almost no information about him or the family history (he died in the early 1940s and my father knows very little). I would appreciate any information that anyone might have about my grandfather, or about the Chalom family history. I'd also be very interested in relevant parts of the Levy family history: my grandmother was Lila Levy, and her father Iamadeo (?) Levy, with a connection somewhere to Malta. Many thanks! Nice site. I return frequently to see if any of my old friends from the Lycee Francais d'Heliopolis (classe de 11e en 1950-1951) are on line... Andre Zagdoune, Albert Leonzini, Eliott Sidicaro, Robert Chehebar, and all the others, if you read these lines please contact me. I already located Moise Rahmani, David Avayou, Albert Zonana, Magdi Risk, Andre Hazan, Zaven Tchaylakian, Albert Herscovics. I hope Monsieur Fer and later Monsieur Debernard did not prevent you from keeping good memories of the nicest Lycee of all!

We are going to Egypt beginning of March 2000 for a root trip. My father was buried in the Jewish cemetery there and I know it is not possible to find the grave. What I would like to know is if there is any kind of written information about the place he was buried. I sincerely don't have much hope but maybe maybe there is a way to trace it. His name was Maurice Sonsino and he died in March 16, 1956. Many thanks for anyone who coule proved the information.
