SOME EARLY EXPLORERS

STEFAN REIF

Fellow of St John’s College & Professor of Medieval Hebrew Studies, Cambridge Univeristy,
Director of the Schecter Unit and Head of the Oriental Division, Cambridge University Library.

Jewish Studies is a field of inquiry constructed by bibliographers; S.D. Luzzette, Leopold Dukes, Meritz Steinschneider, “the prince of bibliographers,” and such disciples as the short fused Solomon Schecter, whose long running feud with the hypersensitive Adolf Neubauer carried traditional Oxford Cambridge, devotes this year’s Perlow Lecture at The New York Public Library to reflection on the distinctive legacy of this group of nineteenth century manuscript hunters and gatherers, singularly driven, prodigiously productive, and often wildly eccentric.

A world authority on the Cairo Genizah and the history of Jewish worship, Stefan Reif is the author of coutless scholarly articles and seven books, including A Jewish Archive from Old Cairo, why Medieval Hebrew Studies?, Hebrew Manuscripts at Cambridge University Library, and fragments found and Fathomed: An Introduction to the Cambridge Genizah Collections, forthcoming from Cambridge University Press. Professor Reif is a past president of the Jewish Historical Society of England and a founder of the Hebraica Library Group.
