Dr. Maurice Mizrahi

Foreword

These books are collections of presentations I gave on each of the 54 Torah portions, the 8 main Jewish holidays, and my background. These talks were intended to be consistent with mainline Jewish tradition, while still heavily influenced by my personal background (a Jewish refugee from Egypt) and my scientific and rational outlook (a doctorate in theoretical physics and a career as a defense analyst). Direct quotations from the Tanach, the Talmud, the Midrash, the classical commentators and other traditional Jewish sources abound and form the basis of my presentations.

These books are written for people who are serious about studying Judaism from both a spiritual and a rational point of view, in the tradition of Maimonides.

The Author

Dr Maurice M. Mizrahi was born and raised in Egypt, which he was forced to leave at age 18 after the Six-Day War, in 1967. He earned a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Texas at Austin and worked in the U.S. Defense Department for 34 years, specializing in science and technology matters, arms control, and defenses against weapons of mass destruction. He has always been fascinated by the interactions between his two main loves, Science and Judaism. He created and led a monthly discussion group on the subject, which met for six years, has been Scholar in Residence on the subject, and has been teaching Judaism to teenagers and adults since 1984. From 1988 to 1991, he and his eldest son Michael have produced, exhibited, and marketed many Judaica computer programs.

In 2006 he received the Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the highest award available to U.S. civil servants. He lives in Burke, Virginia, and is married to pianist/psychologist Joan Berman Mizrahi. They have three adult children: Michael, Trina, and Jonathan; and five grandchildren. He frequently leads services and discussion sessions and gives talks and Torah commentaries at his synagogue, the local Jewish Community Center, and online.
